      Budapest, 13 May 2013

      Philantropist Mr. George Soros  and  Jim Yong Kim president of the WorldBank have visited a Romani settlement in Frumuşani, Romania. The visit was organized by the Romanian  Educational and Development Taskforce and the Roma Education Fund.

      Bucharest, 9 May 2013

      The Roma Education Fund was invited to join Mr. George Soros, Chairman of the Open Society Foundations, and Dr Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group, during their Bucharest on 9 May 2013. As a co-founder – together with the former World Bank president James Wolfensohn – of the Roma Education Fund, Mr. Soros’ financial support has enabled over a half million young Roma to access formal, quality inclusive education from the preschool to university level.

      How could universities, churches, companies, and media empower Roma? In what ways could Roma participate in policies affecting their lives beyond taking part in limited forms of political consultations? How to combine the struggle against racism, the promotion of democratic solidarity, and the reinforcement of an open Roma culture that allows for diverse and multiple identities? In the framework of the conference high level policy-makers, senior scholars, and prominent Roma activists and intellectuals engage a broader audience.

      On the occasion of 8 April, International Roma Day, the Roma Education Fund (REF) welcomes the recent statement of Minister Dušan Čaplovič, who called for preschool education free of charge for children from the age of four. In addition, REF would like to call the attention of the public to the their research activities identifying the biggest barriers in education, as well as the piloted programs indicating the way forward to an inclusive education system.
